I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. Our family travelled extensively throughout B.C. in the summer, mainly up to my mom's parents farm in Smithers (northern B.C.) Travelling up to the farm exposed me to many different habitats and the grandeur of the landscape throughout B.C.
At an early age, I remember my dad being an avid photographer. He always had the latest Voigtlander camera equipment and our household had many of the latest books and guides on photography. My love of photography was initiated by his enthusiasm and the browsing photographs that were in his books. I would look at the photos over and over developing an appreciation of how each photographer composed and captured nature in different ways.
My first camera was a Kodak box camera. But what changed me as a photographer was my first 35mm camera, a second-hand Zeis-Ikon. This was my intro to color and 35mm. I would spend great quantities of time framing and setting up pictures to make the best of my limited exposures. In those days you had to buy the film, then after finishing the roll, pay to get it developed. Anticipation was a big part of photography. You had to wait for a week to see if your pictures came out. Today with digital photography you can really experiment, taking as many photos as you wish, from every perspective imaginable.
I have a love and appreciation for the beauty of nature and have endeavored to capture what I saw in any setting. My appreciation for nature grew as I hiked and travelled throughout B.C. and Washington, exploring mountain, forest and seashore areas. Most of the pictures taken in this part of my life were done using a small digital Sony camera. Mainly because weight was always a factor when exploring with a backpack. It wasn't until I retired that I bought my first Canon T1i. This is where I made my biggest growth as a photographer. Not only did I take lots of photos but started to benefit from using Lightroom and Photoshop to better enhance my work.
My goal in photography is to produce finished products that are pleasing to the eye and that it captures a memory or event in my life. Though I still have a strong preference for west coast landscape shots I have started to explore portrait, macro and wildlife photography. With this said, I like to experiment with my photography utilizing many techniques, such as blending, HDR and/or photoshop plugins like Topaz and Nik software. I appreciate that to a purist this may not be the avenue a "true photographer" takes but... art is in the eye of the beholder. Photography is about being creative, producing the best image you can and loving what you do!
